valve cover and oil probs.

I have an 87 crx si and there's oil leaking but I'm not sure from where. I took the valve cover off and it still has a decent gasket on it. Since I've messed with that and tightened down the cover the oil isn't leaking out of the valve cover all that bad or at all. But there's oil leaking from somewhere all over my engine and underneath my engine. It sorta looks like someone poured oil all over my engine and beneath it and then let it burn for a good 100,000 miles. What should I do? Is this common with crx's or what?

Re: valve cover and oil probs.

The first thing I would do is steam clean the engine or at least use a can of engine degreaser. This way you can start with a clean engine making it alot easier to see where the leak is coming from. You can also get an ultra violet dye to put in the engine oil. After you put in the dye and run the car for a while you can then take a black light to the motor and any leaks will glow. The most common leaks are the valve cover and oil pan gasket. you should also check oil filter to make sure it is tight. If none of these are the problem then it is probably your crank shaft seals.

Hope this helps

Re: valve cover and oil probs.

are there drips coming from the front and back of the engine? (left and right actually) mine is doing that because the front and rear seals are leaking

Re: valve cover and oil probs.

I'm not sure but most of the oil is in the rear of the engine.

i could be the main rear seal (that is the one around the crank)
