problems with speedometer and sluggishness

HI there, i need some help with my 87 300zx, non-turbo. its an automatic. just recently the speedometer has been reading really crazy and if i'm going over 30 it'll just read 0. also since that started happening, the car will have these sluggish hesitations. not when i'm accelerating, or braking, but if i'm coasting. it feels like the car physically slows itself down for about half a second, returns to normal, and then maybe does it a couple more times depending on how long i'm coasting for. i dont know how this happened, but i recently replaced my rear brake pads but i dont see how that could be related. also my suspension is in need of repair so it doesnt take bumps so well these days. i'm thinking maybe something got knocked loose, but i dont know where to start looking. please, help me if you can.
thanks, steve

Re: problems with speedometer and sluggishness

Heres an idea... Sell it, and buy a Z32 . Honestly, I think its your electrical system, maybe your EFI? I think your speed control may be at fault for your shitty hesitation. And its a simple speedometer mal-function for that realm... 15bucks tops to replace. Peace

Re: problems with speedometer and sluggishness

Notice on older cars, non-ECU controlled vehilces, every time you let off the gas, the RPM dies much faster, and its much more un-comfortable of a ride? Well now there is something called a Speed Control that configures the amount of throttle possition to add a more comfortable ride. If this goes outta wack though, it will ride like a muscle car. Makes sense? Peace

i gotcha buddy. thanks a bunch for helpin me out. i took a look at it today, and sheesh, go figure it was just the speedometer cable. that thing was just jiggling around like a fish outta water. i reconnected it and bam, problem solved. hesitation and everything went back to normal.
thanks again, steve

Re: problems with speedometer and sluggishness

I have the same problem with my 85 Turbo but only under heavy acceleration on a incline, like a on ramp, I found out it was an arcing spark plug wire taht was sparking on the manifold, so I put some nology spark plug wires and Denso Iridium Spark plugs, now runs like a champ those iridium spark plugs are awesome Denso said they add 9 WHP.

Re: problems with speedometer and sluggishness

They are 13 bucks a plug. But they are worth it your car doesn't misfire anymore and Denso also garaunteed to take off 2-3 tenths of your quater mile E/T time.
