Angry Xbox (Thomson) DVD Drive...AHHHHHHH!

From day one, the Microsoft Xbox DVD Drive has been a piece of crap. Mine is the cursed Thomson. The Xbox is about 3 years old. Now, it doesn't play ANY games, DVDs, or Audio CD's. I have tried the CD Lens cleaner from Staples. I understand that there are 3 types of drives - Thomson, Phillips, and Samsung. I have heard that the Samsung was the best. Microsoft wants $100 + shipping to fix it - why not just buy a new one? Were can i get one? Does anyone have any problems/solutions? Will a regular DVD Rom drive from a desktop PC work? Please post away!

Thanks in advance,
Joe

What's the problem with it exactly. Like the cds are a bit scratched or something with the motor/laser?

Re: Xbox (Thomson) DVD Drive...AHHHHHHH!

No, all the discs are perfect. They all play in my friend's XBOX. I get the "XBOX cannot read disc...check to see if it is dirty or damaged." None of the disks load. The drive opens and closes, and attempts to read the disk. Any ideas?

Maybe you should try taking it apart and checking if you can see anything wrong with it. Or you can try to find a replacement part and fixing it yourself.

Re: Xbox (Thomson) DVD Drive...AHHHHHHH!

I have taken it apart and cleaned the lens manually with a kit. I have heard that the Samsung drives are the best. The only place i could find them is good old Ebay.

I would go for the ebay, if the price is good.

How do you find out what kind of DVD drive you have in the Xbox?
