Learn stick shift before or after buying a car?

Alright, I'm about to buy my first car. One last thing needs to be decided: automatic or manual? All of the cars I've driven have been automatics, but I've heard a lot of good things about manual. I figure I'm going to be stuck with my first car for a while, so I might as well extract the most power/enjoyment out of it as possible.

I know pretty much exactly how manual works, it's just that I have no practice driving a manual car. My question is... should I learn manual before I get the car (i.e., at a driving school or rent a manual car), or get the car and then have my dad teach me?

You should learn how to drive a manual regardless. Automatics are nice for a lot of things, but I do prefer manual transmissions for the higher performance cars.

What kind of car are you looking to get?

driving in a manual is much more fun than automatic

manuals r also cheaper(usually 1000 bucks cheaper)

uhh if u r really lazy, get an auto

i see many advantages to manual though

i would try to learn how to drive manual before buying the car though

If any of your buddies have a dirtbike or 4-wheeler, ask if you can ride it. This will just get you used to using a clutch, and let you figure out how it works. Then when you drive a manual, you might make some bad shifts, but I doubt you'll stall.

as long as your parents are chill with you buying a manual even though you don't know how yet, get one. get a friend that knows how to drive manual to pick the car up, and then you guys can go drive to an empty lot and you can learn. get a manual. stick bimmers are so sexy. girls will crawl all over you. even guys will.

Hehe... I got it! A '94 BMW 325i -- manual, of course.

Everyone loves it, of course, and I'm pretty much getting the hang of it.

The only wierd part was that it wasn't explained to me that you can let go of the clutch very slowly and have it move without giving it any gas -- i had thought that you wait to feel it engage and then give it gas before it starts moving at all. So, my problem was basically that I was letting the clutch out too fast.

it's not that hard. all it takes is a bit getting used to.

hm...whoever was teaching you should have let you known about the friction point. it's what helped me get the hang of it
