should I just give up?

My friend David is pretty suicidal. I think its 3 times now. His arms and legs are full of scars from self-inflicted wounds. Everytime I try to convince him life is worth living, he just gives me the ol' "nothing happens in my life. Theres no point."

Its been a month since his last suicide attempt. Today he was talking about "wow, I really can't believe its only been a month". I try to convince him that "you would have missed this entire month had you gone through with the suicide" but that makes no difference. He just doesn't see the little things in life that make it worth living, like seeing movies, checking out our friends' band practices, and just taking a breath in the chilly late-winter weather on a sunny day.

Lately I've given up on the arguement. Everytime he tells me his life is pointless, I just say "you're right, it is, just end it now. Another day of life isn't worth it, just end it all." Should I be doing that? He hasn't seemed any more depressed lately than usually. I just think this is guy is a lost cause and nothing will change his opinion about life. I try to convince him that life may "suck" now but he's probably got 50 or 60 years left to live. But nothing I tell him matters.

Should I just give up?

Don't give up. He sounds like a text book case for Clinical Depression. Make sure he is seeing a psychologist and taking his meds and his behavious and attitude will change.

When its so obvious, you would expect a person like that to have gotten help.

Thing is, the fact that he's telling you all of this is the proverbial "cry for help". He's telling you because he needs to hear you say that life is worth living etc..

Yep, was about to say the same thing.

If someone really wants to top themselves, they will.

Tell him that he is the only one who can make his life worth living. Tell him he needs to get off his ass and go exercise and eat fruit. It has been found that eating fruit and exercising can get you out of depresion. He needs to feel like he is in control of his life and exercising and seeing his body take shape will acomplish that. If you want to see him live for much longer I would sugest geting him into a phsyciatrist(sp?) right away and start him on some Lexapro, depretion meds.

Never give up. Once he stops hearing your thoughts on it, he may get worse and think that you no longer care. Talk to his parents(if you can or if they're willing to listen), try and get him into a psyc ward. And even counseling. I pray for the best for your friend.

Re: should I just give up?

Well, after the most recent attempt he was sent to a psyc hospital for a few days to get treatment and medications. I still don't know how to make him appreciate life.

Re: should I just give up?

Generally speaking the people who threaten to kill themselves never do.. The statistic is somewhere in the low 30%s I think... Still it's not wise to risk it.. a life is a life.

Re: should I just give up?

I got to go along with MR2spyder on this, besided getting medication and pych help he needs to get a hobby something that he enjoys, something that will basically keep his mind off suicide. If your lucky while he is doing his hobby he will find something worth living for and then he will be more inclined to do other things which he will also enjoy, thus giving more reasons to live. Please don't give up on your friend, if he is talking to you it means he respects your oppinion and if your oppinion is that his life doesn't matter his view will also change that way. Make sure you tell him that he is important to you and that without him here you would be hurt very badly, you have to show him that there are people that love him and that there is a reason for him to continue life telling him isn't enough, you have to show him. I wish you the best of luck. -Justin
