Question 1998 Gran Prix Key Sticking in Ignition

I have read the other postings concerning this issue. I took my console apart today, cleaned and sprayed some WD-40 on the stick shift to see if that will fix the problem. I am no mechanic so please tell me where the "switch" is located that tells the car to release the key because it is in park. Is it inside the console or under the car. I am trying to confirm that I am looking in the correct place. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Jeff

Do you have an owners manual? If so, look in there. It will show you the locations of the shift inter-lock releases. I don't have one hadny to reference..sorry. I seem to remember one being on the underside of the column.

Check the ignition itself. There is a pin that will snap that releases the key. With my car, the pin snapped and wouldn't let it out, had it replaced but it's still partially broken. I don't need to put my foot on the break to shift it out of park now. Hell, the key doesn't even need to be in the ignition to shift the car. Lock your doors....

the switch you are looking for is located on the shifter itself.we call a shifter a control.remove the shifter handle by pulling out the metal u clip wich is on the front side of the shifter handle pry it forward with a amall pocket screwdriver.remove handle now you can unclip the bezel to get down to the bottom of the shifter the switch is a small white box with a few wires going into it unplug it and check inside the plug for spilled soda coffee etc clean it out real good with rubbing alcohol or spray brake cleaner the plug the switch and the entire shifter metal parts also look at the purple wire to see if it is broken anywhere. if this doesnt work you have to replace the entire shifter.

Many thanks for the responses. I have fixed the problem, I think, well at least it is working now. I was able to do this because of the help I received here. I know I will be back for more advice because I plan on keeping this car for a long time. Again thanks for the assistance.
