Yukon odeometer fraud*PLEASE READ*

I have just bought a yukon denali 99'
the mileage reads about 78000, and I had noticed predrilled holes below my steering wheel ( right next to the computer plug-in port on the very bottom of the dash trim) and I also noticed three wires that were cut, and just lingering there below the dash that went through the firewall and connects to the battery. One wire for power, one for the ground on the battery, and another one which goes underneath my car( i havent determined the exact location of this wire yet.) I think I am a victim of odometer fraud, because a friend of mine with a regular Yukon SLT has a switch built on to her dash that disconnects/shuts off the odometer, and speedometer. I was wondering if anyone else may know what I am talking about or if anyone has this switch installed on their vehicle. I am not out to get you, I just need to know the exact configuration of the wires and how the switch is hooked up before i issue a lawsuit on the dealer I bought the truck from. thanxs for any help!

i am not sure what those wires are for. my guess would be that they are there for a data port for the engineers to get info on the engine sensors and other things like that. i don't know if that is for the dashboard functions like odometer/trip meter and things like that. it could be though. does the switch in your friends yukon actually disconnect the guages or just turn off the display of the guages?

If the Yukon that you have purchased was ever used to tow a trailer, it is entirely possible that the wires you have found are for an electronic trailer brake controller that is often removed by dealers who would prefer not to disclose the use of a vehicle for trailer towing. You may also find wires dangling near the rear bumper where the trailer plug would have been if the dealer was trying to conceal the previous use of the vehicle.

It's difficult to change the odometer on 98 and newer cars. Do you have an electronic or mechanical milage counter? You could also check with On Star. If you explain your concern they may give you some info as apoint of reference. Legit dealers won't get near odometer fraud so did you get your car from one of those lot dearlers? Also you can track down former owners from DMV records and get maintenace records from dealers service records. Keep digging. Cars have a good history especially GM's which track all kinds of info we don't even know about.

Re: Yukon odeometer fraud*PLEASE READ*

If the odometer was tampered with you should see a line going down all the number which were messed with. I forgot which year they started it but the yukon and yukon denalis are equipped with tamper proof odometer that once moved a line is created through the numbers. Some people can change this but yet to my knowledge no one can really mess with this protection yet.

My guess is it's for a trailer hookup or something...I used to own a programmer that would do these trucks (for legal mileage resets). If I remember correctly (only used it on Corvette Clusters), you do a hookup directly to the mileage prom on the cluster...so the wires you're referring to are not likely a culprit.

However, if you're concerned, address the issue with your dealer (or another), and ask for an explanation of what they are...

I'm a Missouri car dealer, and if I was going to be prone (which I'm not!!) to roll the miles on a vehicle, do you think I would roll them to 78,000 miles!! Hell, if I'm going to risk time in the big house, I'm gonna take it to 38,000 miles. And then be stupid enough to leave the wires hanging?? Relax!

'99 and up vehicles are hard to tamper with, and you do have state agencies and also private and corporate intities keeping tabs on alot of vehicles these days. Leaving a papertrail that's hard to run from.

I understand you being paranoid, but seriously, those wires are probably for some other piece of electronical equipment, who knows??

-slacker

And I hope your friend doesn't try trading her vehicle to me!
