I'm trying to decide if I want to buy this car. It has 130,000 miles and it needs a left front fender but other than that it's in decent shape. The only thing that makes my think twice is this weird shift problem. If I'm crusing down the road at about 50mph and start up a long hill it will jurk as if it's trying to decide if it should drop into over drive. If I do nothing it will keep doing this untill I crest the hill. If I go ahead and mash the gas it will go ahead and shift into over drive and storme off up the hill. Is the tranny about to eat it? Is this really a transmission problem or is it some sort of Shift Module trouble. I know very little about GM products or automatic transmissions for that matter. For $500 I should probable just roll this dice. It's got all the little dodads and they all work. Could make for a fun project and would haul people better than my Truck.

Re: 1992 Old 88 Royal Over Drive trouble
I dont know if it's your tranny, it could be a cracked plug or a plug wire.

I had the same problem with my 92. Come to find out the voltage was holding around 10.8 - 11 volts. I changed the alternator which raised the voltage. I did this because of light flicker, but guess what, my overdrive problem vanished and has not returned. My guess is that the voltage for the controller board in the transmission was borderline.
