damn emissions

i failed emissions, they said i have a shit load of o2 is commin out, and a lot of unburned gas. i changed the plugs, and am working on the wires. i think i need to do the o2 sensor tho, maybe its runnin rich. idk, any suggestions on this???

HC=3.3298 sposed to be .8 fail
CO=85.2249 sposed to be 15 fail
NOx=1.10313 sposed to be 2 pass

check the swirl control valve this is located on the back of the intake plenum towards the left of the engine by the firewall. this unit controles flaps inside the intake to take in less less air in your engine. check this valve by opening it then seal the vacume line if it holds the seal its good. this is most likely your prob. oil change will not effect smog.

does every intake have the swirl control valve?? cuz i dont have stock intake, if it does ill mess with it, but i dont know if thats the problem, i am gonna concentrate on the o2 sensor for now, and if that doesnt do it, then ill resort to other things

all ka24de eng have them. intake plenum looks like headers and connects to head. o2 may be the problem though if you trip a check eng code. then u arnt going to pass emissions.

in english please, i didnt understand any of that, except that my car should have the swirl valve. how do you trip a check engine code?? and waht is a plenum

If your o2 sensor is bad it may or may not trip a check engine code if your check eng light is on then its a 100% fail in most states. A bad o2 sensor wouldn't nesassarly make u fail smog as I know many people with no o2 sensors at all. Take both o2 sensors out and clean them with carb cleaner and wipe them dry and reinstall. Now for the swirl control valve. This is a part that controles air intake in the engine giving your engine proper combustion and mostly just saves fuel. It is located in the upper section of the intake manifold on pas side, on rear of the engine. This is big tubular thing that connects with 4 diffrent pipes to the head :-) (This is called a plenum). The swirl control unit looks like a canister with a vacume line connected to it. Check to see if the valve opens when u start your ride. Then pull the vacume line off of it. Did it close? If not u got a bad swirl control valve. This is a dealer only part that costs 80 bux. Its realy better to take the whole unit off and take the flaps out of the intake plenum. And its a 4hp gain! (Best For Turbo Aplications) Also runnin platinum plugs increase combustion giving u less o2 readings I recommend botch platnum. Finaly clean your throtle body with some carb cleaner too. Remove pcv valve located on the front of the valve cover and spray in the hose that connects to the throtle body. If you dont pass smog then u got some serious internal issues. (Bad Rings, Bad Valve's, Bad Fuel Injector,) Would be other places to look.

ok, so now im lookin at my intake, and im findin no sensors, and the wires i see coming out of the intake, (right by the ends) are bolted on with some star head. i cant get at em. also, i found the plenum, or whatever it is, it says something like, "eccs"...im a retard, i admit, i may need a little more help with this, and im not takin it in, cuz i have no cash to pay for it.this is something i have to do myself

I am currently in the process of a complete tare down and rebuild of my 92 240 I will take pictures of what u need to check for proper opperation. And probly take pictures for the whole thing!
