I had a nearly identical problem. I have a 2001 325i sedan I bought used and the left front signal light went out last week. I also could not discern which way to press to release the hook. From other pictures in the manual I can tell the assembly is held in by the grey plastic tongue. That tongue is bifurcated and passes through a short channel and sticks out the other end, which you can see through the access hole just under the edge of the hood. I tried pressing down, left and right on the tongue and down on the channel, to no avail. Finally I called the dealer for assistance but they said it was covered under the maintenance contract so just bring it in. I ended up never getting advised how to do it. I think they don't want to lose the revenues from change bulbs. I will try other garages and watch here to see if you find out first.
