V-6 with the best power?

I'm buying a ranger soon and i wanted to know what my options are as far as v-6's from 1992-1998. I know of the 3.0 which has 145 hp and 157 torque. and the 4.0 which has 207 hp and 238 torque just wanted to know what my options are, thanks for the help!

Your numbers are a little off.
The 3.0L in the years you specified makes 145HP and 165lb/ft.
While the 4.0L makes only 160 HP and 225lb/ft.
The 4.0L you talked about is the new SOHC engine that came out in 1999 (i think) and yes it makes that much power. I have one of the 4.0L OHV engines like the years you talked about, and trust me, they dont lack any power. I really like my Ranger and good luck with yours.

GM engines have more power!

There are no other engines with more hp? I found a nice 1996 GMC Sonoma 4X4 5spd. It's a 4.3 SFI that makes 190hp and 250lbs. Now thats what im talkin about! 160 wouldn't be enough for me.

I think I'm gonna go with GM!

The 4.0L is plenty of power for a Ranger. I had a 1992 w/ a 4.0 & 5-speed and it would get up a move on out. It had 225 ft. lbs. of torque between 92 & 98. In fact my brother's 03 S-10 doesn't feel like it has any more power than my 4.0L Ranger did. If you want a hunk of power, don't get a 3.0L. It doesn't have enough torque to make up for the lack of HP. An automatic in a Ranger will also kill power.

Talking

I am actually now looking at the 1999+ rangers. with 200 hp & 240 lbs. I drove one today, automatic, and man it had balls! I can't emagine what it would be like in manual..... still lookin for the right one:

1999-2002 Ranger 4.0 SOHC extended cab 4X4 5spd.
OR
1996-2002 S-10 4.3 Vortec extended cab 4X4 5spd.

Good Luck finding one with a manual tranny. They are few and far between. If you get one with an auto., make sure you get one with a 5 speed. It has a little better ratios. It's the 5R55E in this list: http://www.therangerstation.com/TransRatios.html

Mine has the 4 speed auto. and it sucks. The ratios are not well matched and it shifts way too early.
