Primer question for all you paint pros....

Do you guys prime everything?

Yes I've read the FAQ, & yes I know primer is a must for the body to get good results.

But what about everything else: Do you prime the interior? The chasis?

What about the tiny parts? Won't the primer cover of fill in the detail?

Thanks in advance,
David

Yup, I only prime the body, unless like vric said, you need to make a radical color change and you need a good base coat.

It's a call you make from experience, knowing when you need to and when you don't. It is a variable in the building process, not a given like removing mold lines etc.

I rarely prime anything but the body. I prime the body primarily because it will have minor scuffs from sanding/polishing the mold lines out, and I want the final color to look it's best and that usually comes from a good smooth coat of primer first. However, since most of my interiors are airbrushed w/flat acrylics, they don't have the tendency to run or etch the plastic like lacquers, so even when I've done a lot of sanding on the seats (the mold lines are a bitch to remove but it's a necessary evil), the paint covers up the sanding marks...and I'm more careful to get these parts smooth. I'll prime a chassis if it's being shot in body color vs. just painting it in black.

Re: Primer question for all you paint pros....

Generally just the body. However, if a part has been modified in a major way then a coat of primer is useful to ensure everything is aligned and correct before painting. Basically I only primer when I absolutely have to, it takes too much extra time! For example, I'm doing a lot of cleanup and a few mods to the dash on the kit I'm building at the moment. When finished cutting, filling and sanding, I'll give it a coat of primer to ensure all is as it should be.
