My pickup finally died, it was leaking more oil than I thought and the engine seized (didn't help that it was 8 degrees F that morning).
I'm planning to replace the motor and am looking for some advice and suggestions. I have never swapped a motor. I can do basic maintenance and mechanical work like replace a water pump or alternator, but don't have much experience beyond that. And since my garage is too small and it's below freezing outside, I will probably farm this out to a local shop, or maybe the dealer, though I''d still like to know what's involved and how much work it is. I'm hoping to keep this adventure at or below about $3,000 1) Any suggestions on a source for a motor? I am considering the following already, feel free to comment or make other suggestions: http://www.chevy-350-engines.com/ http://shop.store.yahoo.com/gofast/gmcrateengines.html http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33615 http://www.greenwoodchevy.com/engine14.htm http://www.highperformanceparts.net/.../10067353.html (looks like the last 2 are the same part number, tho) 2) If I do buy a motor that is "Completely assembled including new oil pan, front timing cover and valve covers" what other components would need to be moved when it's installed? I expect to take off the carb and put it on the new motor, but what about things like the water pump? Other, non-motor parts would stay (A/C, alternator, steering pump, etc)...but what am I not considering? 3) Any books or websites I should get to help me understand what's involved? Preferably something more detailed than "disconnect everything, yank out the motor, drop in the new one, reconnect everything'... Thanks in advance for your input! |

Re: 78 K10 engine swap, help a new-b
i like that chevy 350 engines site to, it's the cheapest i've found anywhere...just put an engine in my 94 Z71...this should be accomplished for well under 3000.00. i actually put a used engine in and paid only 500.00 for the engine........good luck!

You should probably concider buying a Haynes manual for your truck .I have one and it has payed for it's self serveral times. It has alot of info. you can also get one on just engines.Ps you should be able to leave your water pump on but I would wate on the a/c and stering pump until the motor is in.

goto www.mortec.com (or is it moretec?)
follow the links to jim pace chevy in ohio. they have the GM 260hp 350 inch motor replacement for about $1300ish. it will bolt right in. is a nice strong engine, adds about 100hp over what your motor made stock. the rest of your parts bolt right up. the motor uses the better valve cover sealing and the 1 piece rear seal. |

Re: 78 K10 engine swap, help a new-b
www.paceparts.com was the best deal! a bit over 1400 shipped, for a new motor.
It's not got a manifold, not even a water pump, but it DOES have a 3-year warranty. My mechanic's best price was 2000 for a new motor, and I'm willing to bet the labor difference between the two isn't $600. Guess I'll find out. Motor gets here Friday then I leave town for a week, hopefully the truck will be done when I get back. Thanks for the input! |
