Waterpump Idler Pulley

Just wondering if anyone you have to replaced the above, and if so, are there any special tools needed, and how do you do it? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated, as my 95 broke a belt, and I am stranded without it!

Thanks
Aaron

Re: Waterpump Idler Pulley

The pump is run off of one of the camshafts, so the three pulley's are cam, pump, tensioner. Which one is bad?

Re: Waterpump Idler Pulley

I knew the tensioner was bad, and didn't even think about the one on the pump! Duh!

However, the one I am referring to is the one on the cam.

I bought the car last fall, and have since put a used motor, brand new transmission in it, and now this happened! I bet I haven't driven it 1,000 miles yet!

Re: Waterpump Idler Pulley

Looks like it is made out of some sort of fiber that is cracking. Is that correct or not?

I appreciate your help big time! And if you could answer 1 more question while I have you attention?

At idle inside the car it sounds like a quiet thumping, cannot hear anything on the outside of the car, and had done it with both motors. Any idea on that too?

Re: Re: Waterpump Idler Pulley

I believe it's like a fiberglass reinforced plastic or carbon compound fused onto a steel collar, but not positive. Another member of this forum tried to remove his and snapped off the end of the cam. You might have/want to have this done for you because of the consequences involved. The procedure includes removal of the valve cover to gain access for the puller, then heating up the collar to get it off. Then press on a new one and reassembly with a new v/c gasket. Is this thumping rotational as related to engine speed or any particular rhythm?

Re: Waterpump Idler Pulley

It seems to be just a constant thumping, dosen't seem to have any effect with engine speed at all. When the mecanics put the new motor in it, they couldn't figure out where it was coming from either.
It's just been a big money pit since I got it

Re: Re: Waterpump Idler Pulley

So you don't think it's coming from the trans input shaft or torque converter?

Re: Waterpump Idler Pulley

You can't isolate the sound to front or rear of the car?
