(Z71)engine 5.7 but Trans filter 5.3?

I just purchased a 1999 Z71 truck and changed out the transmission filter. The filter for the truck required a transmission filter for the 5.3 liter engine..The engine is marked as being a 5.7, under the hood where the serpintine belt diagram sticker is?

I also have a whining/rotary sounding noise under the bed of the truck..It comes on when the engine is started and turns off when the engine is stopped..Is this normal? Transmission related?

Thanks Gents

PS...202,000 miles on my 3/4 ton 1996 Chevrolet p/u! It still runs as good as the day I bought it.

Re: (Z71)engine 5.7 but Trans filter 5.3?

While the 5.7 and 5.3 are different engines, little has changed in the transmissions. This filter will work just fine. I currently own both. It would be cheaper for GM to use the same physical casing on the transmission. Your OIL filter WILL NOT BE THE SAME. The 5.7 is a truck size filter and the 5.3 uses a tiny little thing. Why? No idea.
The sound underneath - is it when the truck is sitting still or in movement? Try this - when you first start it turn the ignition key and listen for this sound before actually engaging the starter. Is this the noise? I am thinking it may be the fuel pump whining.
Let us know.

Hello BigRed,
Thanks for responding to my post..Took me awhile to check out the truck. When I turn on the ignition I do not hear the noise..After the truck is started you can kind of hear the sound. It's when the truck is turned off that you can really hear it and it last for about 3 seconds..It is coming from the gas tank area and i'm with you on it being the fuel pump...Does this mean it's going out?

I would probably say you had better get ready to drop the gas tank and put in a new pump. If it's making noise like that, chances are it is getting ready to go out. It might be a good idea to set aside a day to go ahead and put one in. I've been stranded before because of a fuel pump going out, and getting it towed home was a pricey lesson to learn.
