it all depends on how much you want to waste of fuel daily and how often you wanna drive it. and if you would like it at all.
for e.g camry's are good reliable cars, but it all realyl depends on you.
alywas check the milage (odometer) how much the car has been done and what year it is, and calculate comparing to see if the odometer, year and the price match to see if its worth buying. if its a close year and a big mileage, it will no doubt be cheaper.
its alwyas best to look at a lot of different places (private selling, newspaper, car yars etc) and then see what you would really preffer.

I agree with Motor Eyes, some good advice there I myself have only recently bought my first car. Its a Toyota (cause they are an awesome company!) If you want something that looks a little sporty try a st162 the fourth gen Celica. Thats what I bought, its slightly damaged and because I looked and waited til a good buy I only paid 2000 thousand and have a car I get to repair myself that will cost about 400$ and will be able to sell it for a lot more Plus they are fuel injected so that will save on petrol cost. But whatever you choose to buy I think you will be pretty safe if its toyota

If you're interested in toyotas I say go to auto.recycler.com and do a few searches to get an idea of what is in your price range and if it's a little more than $3K don't worry since usually you can talk the person down to the $3K you have.
