Anyone here run a Pan Chassis?

I've been reading threads in here for a bit, haven't posted because I haven't seen much I could say much on. I've had a Futaba FX-10, a Bolink-Parma PSE Hemi Deuce, and an Associated RC10B3.

Been considering an HPI RS4 (electric, NO NITRO) and desperately want one of the old Kyosho Spiders with the Ferrari 330P4 body set.

But, anyways, my question is posed to all the guys here, and its actually something my dad's brought up a few times before. Back in the late 80's/early 90's, and right up to the Touring Car revolution, the top on-road cars were all pan chassis. Companies like Bolink and Trinity had THE cars to have when you ran on-road. Of course, these cars had maybe a 1/4inch of suspension travel and were notoriously squirrelly for novices, plus you needed a book of references to set them up properly.

But, as my dad proved by dusting off his old Trinity, the old pan cars can still corner better than the new touring cars.

So, are there any pan chassis car guys on this forum?

sweet, someone else with a pan car, I have two pan car chassis, both from Parma, the viper and the same one you have. I've had it for liek a year and i still need to do the body, shows how much time I've had lately.... Anyway, ya I lvoe them compared to the touring cars. your right, when starting out, they are so hard to drive well, they are so tail happy, and you also gotta love how most of the wheel travel is chassis flex, but they are so crazy fast. I was running on a carpet track, and there was another touring car, and i lapped him all the time, when he was off, I really pushed my car, and was doing consistant 15 second laps, while the pace that won the A-main stock class, was around 23 seconds a lap average. And i was running with a reedy rage stock motor, and a 6 cell of 2000's which i no longer use. Another time i was at a parking lot track, and it was also rather crazy, as I would pass the touring cars in the corner on the outside lane, and keep up or pass teh nitro ones going down the straights, using the same reedy rage motor and those old 2000's. So in brief, I love them and I will never own a touring car, cause they cost more, and post slower times, and are slower accel and top end.

The opinoins and view expressed in this post are soley mine, and do not reflect the views or opinions of DTE Energy in anyway. (company mandated statement when posting.)

I got an Academy SP3 Lance pancar fitted with a LRP super quantum ESC and a Team Orion 17x3 motor powered by a 2100 batt. Runs great

Sounds like some stellar pieces both of you have.

I've been planning on picking up another Trinity for racing. Thing of it is, nearest track is a city away. My local Hobbytown USA has parking lot races during the summer, but they're more geared towards kids with Traxxas stuff. I don't think they'd be too keen on letting a Trinity Evolution 10 with Parma 333SP body and Madness motor (remember those?) come out and play.

Before you pick it up, og and ask them if you can run with them, as long as its in liek the same class, you should be fine, but ask anyway. What kind of radios are you guys using on your cars?

Dad's had us all hooked on Futaba stuff. My brother still uses his RTR Traxxas Spirit's radio gear in his Associated RC10B3.

I'll probably stick with the trusty Futaba S3003.

Re: Anyone here run a Pan Chassis?

i got a trc spec 10. 20 year old chassis and i raced it recently. absolutely blew away the competition, all running latest model chassis, and it was my first race with teh car. loved every second of it, far more fun than a tourer.

Re: Anyone here run a Pan Chassis?

Ya, i also find that they are more fun than a 4wd on the track, either car or stadium truck. There is no real comparision between the two, i guess the best way to describe them would be the F1 cars of R/C. Or would those be the F1 R/C cars.... I guess it doesnt matter since the chassis are exteremely simaliar, with almost no real difference. the only differences, not including the new 4wd one, is the front suspension, and even there, its just a look, no real dampening, just some small springs. i never want to own a touring car, just cause these are so damn fast.

I'm only interested in the touring cars for two reasons; cost (even Bolinks are getting up there, and the parts just aren't as available now) and the number of classes out there for them.

I think the touring guys just know that the pan cars are faster and thus are trying to eliminate them by making them appear "obosolete".

I have a Bolink I got 15 years ago. It's really fast when the track is nice and clean but if there is any dust like on a tenniscourt or a parking lot the car likes to go into a spin frenzy. It used to have a Nascar body but a few years ago I got the narrowing kit and now I can put sedan bodies on it, right now I have the Aston Martin body.
I have for many years thought about adding independent suspension from other cars so I'm piecing one together with A arms from a TL01 and the driveshafts, I also have a stealth transmission from an RC10 buggy but I don't know what type of tyres to use, sedan are too narrow for 2wd and the buggy tyres are too big, and the original tyres have too much offset so they will be wider than the body...my brain hurts, I think I'm gonna leave it alone for now. Maybe I'll get a graphite axle for it from an Rc10L to replace the steel one.

spin frenzy's are fun. if ya don't wanna spin out, do't get on the throttle so hard.

Re: Anyone here run a Pan Chassis?

personally, i would have kept the car wider, rather then making the car narrower, that will just make it a little bit harder to control. A graphite drive shaft shoudl reduce the weight ab it, improving accleration, but it will make the car even lighter on the rear, and will, more than likely, make it even harder to control.
