Question :banghead: 1988 Jeep Cherokee, Part time Light:banghead:

During our recent snow storm here in jersey. I engaged the four wheel drive mode in my girlfriends Jeep cherokee, 1986 pioneer. I had some trouble getting the shifter to the four wheel drive gear i needed. I went all the way to the four wheel low gear, with some force. And after that i put it back to four wheel high. Four wheel drive worked very good. now after the ground was dry. i put the gear back to 2 Wheel drive. But the part time light will not go out. i tried to go back and forth in and out of 4 wheel and back to 2 wheel but to my dismay it still will not go out. the truck is back at 2 wheel drive, but the part time light is still on.

I heard that it is bad for the transfer case, to drive the jeep in part time on dry pavement. could it be a bad clicker? any information would greatly be appreciated.

Re: 1986 Jeep Cherokee, Part time Light

Hey I had the same problem, the part time light would just not go out. Try putting it in 4 hi then back into 2 wheel dr then reverse your jeep, it worked for me, I don't understand why but it did, it's a cheap and easy thing to try.

Re: 1986 Jeep Cherokee, Part time Light

there is a vacume motor that more than likly has falid and you are now in 4x4 all the time. it is located n the passenger side of the front axels it will have three lines runing to itunplug them then start the truck and see if it goes out. then put them back on and see if it comes back on. if so check the hole vacume system for leaks, cracks, blockages etc. these systems are notorious for it messing up. hope this helps

My 89 XJ has the same problem and has been checked out (to no avail), but it isn't in 4WD and reverse doesn't help. Been living with it for 3 years.

My light goes on anytime I have my foot on the gas, as soon as I let off then the light goes out. Also, does anyone else have probs with their 4WD slipping out? I have a 1990 Cherokee
