a. Silly putty is most certainly a fluid, but that in itself does not classify it as a solid, liquid or gas because all three can be fluids. Silly putty is not a gas, plain and simple.
So, when answering the solid/liquid questions, I examined the definitions and properties of each. The only way a solid can be a fluid is to be composed of super-fine particles, like powder or sand. But in a powder, you can identify a particle of a certain size (short of counting molecules), and those particles conform to the definition of a solid. Liquids are fluid by nature, but silly putty does not seem to fit the definition of a liquid at first thought. liquid (from dictionay.com) The state of matter in which a substance exhibits a characteristic readiness to flow, little or no tendency to disperse, and relatively high incompressibility. Silly putty exhibits quite a readiness to flow; so much so that you can form it, but it will not hold its shape. Silly putty also has the ability to conform to the shape of its container (usually a plastic egg), a property most commonly identified, and often used to define, a liquid. So, while I will admit, silly putty is a rather viscous liquid, it is a liquid nonetheless. b. "Mineral" is used in this context as a colloquialism from a game. It is simply used to classify the most vague attributes of the object in the game. mineral (from Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, © 1996, 1998 MICRA, Inc.) 3. Anything which is neither animal nor vegetable, as in the most general classification of things into three kingdoms (animal, vegetable, and mineral). Arguing with the term "mineral" in the context of the game 20 questions is tantamount to challenging the circular hierarchy of Rock, Paper, Scissors. c. silly putty is usually that tan skin color, but I have some blue silly putty on my desk at work. Silly putty has been manufactured in any number of different colors, including "glow-in-the-dark."
