Question Single mom desparately needs advice on Dodge Dynasty

Since repairs made at state inspection in October, my 91 Dodge Dynasty has been running high in park and it seems to be getting worse as time goes on. It has 120,000 miles and is maintenanced regularly. Oil levels are fine and recently had new gas tank, lines, etc. replaced. The engine funs fine at first start, but revs higher as it warms up. This is becoming an increasing problem as I am now having difficulty getting the car to stop at red lights etc. and it seems to accelerate on it's own. I am looking for some advice before I take it to a mechanic so I know a little about what the problem could be and what to expect. Thanks for any help anyone can give!!

Sounds like you have a worsening vacuum leak.

Angry

Get full coverage and have it stolen and burned beyond recognition, or run it off a cliff, into a tree, anything just get rid of that piece of poo-poo!!!!!!

I had a '94 88k on it when I got it, cause I had no credit dealer says " keep this for a year and come back and we can get you a first time buyers" yeah I was naive!!!

Had the car 9 days and the water pump busted $65, sent to the dealership, gone for 6 weeks, got the car back and 3 days later the radiator collapsed
$497, in the shop for 12 weeks, got it back again 3 weeks harmonic balancer fell off in the middle of the street $375, Sent to dealer again gone for 4 weeks got it back 3 days later stock radio caught on fire whole electrical system fried had to rewire it $785 gone for 6 weeks. Came home from the shop, pulled in the driveway the brakes gave out I ran into the house. Had them replaced. Got up to go to work the very next morning and the transmission went out. I said screw it and gave it back, got sued for the balance cause they auctioned it for 100 dollars and I am a smarter person about buying Dodge's.

I agree, find a mechanically inclined freind and have him check the vacume lines, leaks can cause cars to do all sorts of strange things!

the hose that connects the PCV Valve to the carberator usually causes it to idle high when cracked.. i had the same prob. with my daytona.. except in my case.. it was ignition timming and vacuum leak. Replace PCV Valve and check the PCV Hoses

Re: Single mom desparately needs advice on Dodge Dynasty

I don't know exactly what your problem could be with your van but i have an older brother who is a certified mechanic and i also know and work with him and four of his close friends who are certified mechanics as well so i know alot more about cars than i really need to know for being 16 but it sounds like your idle is set to high so you might want to have that checked out. it's also normal for it to run high in park when it's cold but after that it should kick down to where it don't run so high and that could be fixed by tuning down your idle.

how do you tone down idle? isnt it computer controlled? if you tone it down on the carburator/throttle body your messing with the fuel/air mixture which will cuase the car to stall often. Most car's idle speed is set in the factory, it should never be high if the rest of the car is working perfectly. but im just starting out, you've got a alot of knowledge in the field.. so please explain for me, thanx

I'm not exactly sure how to do much since your vehicle is computer ran mainly but i could talk to my brother or call one of the other guys and ask them about it and get back to you on that as soon as i can but i wouldn't worry to much as all it sounds like is that it is idleing to high but i'll tell them about what you said is wrong with it and ask them what to tell you.

You might have a high idle because your timing is off, set the timing to the correct setting and the idle will go back to normal. You can also fiddle with the idle speed by turning the distributor. In the case of a vacuum leak, you might idle higher or lower. Like you said, you would be running rich or lean. That is what happens when you have a vacuum leak. The best way to fix the idle issue is to fix the problem causing it to idle too high.
