Most likely this is just a normal F1, but according to that chart they only built one normal F1 while they were making Lm's, so that doesn't really make any sense, unless this is just a show car that came in for a few days. Or maybe this isn't the factory at all, which once again doesn't explain why there are TWO Lm's and a front spoiler in there. Oh well, it's a nice pic of the LM anyways. But do you see the car I mean, behind the three guys?

Re: The F1 Unicorns - the black LM's

I'm pretty sure that car is this one: http://www.centralcoastweb.com/nsxb/...ren/img174.JPG

Chassis #002. Road cars can have a package put on them called the "High Downforce Kit" which makes a road car have the aerodynamics of an LM. This kit includes a spoiler, new rims, front splitter, and a body kit.

yep, that's the one! You have to admit though, one could be fooled by that car. It looks a lot like the LM. I thought that I was just seeing things, and that it might not have even been a Mclaren at all, and I was thinking I might be making a fool of myself, but I can see now that at least it looked like one. That's definitely it, you can see the front body kit for the LM right next to it. So, do you think that that's the shop where they were building them, anyway, or was it just a lucky chance that two LM's were in the same building?

Thats the factory I think. The car you thought was a black LM was in there for an intercom system to be put in.

yeah, I found the site that had all that info on it a few minutes ago. Apparently that was the factory and the guy who took the pictures was having a tour, in which he came out with the complete "Driving Ambition" book. The Black "LM" was just a road car, like you said, getting LM Parts putting on it. I understand everything now except why there's a second LM in the background of all the pictures (behind the glass). That's two LM's in one building! Since this is over in England, that means that it's probably not the U.S. Mclaren, so that leaves it to be one of the other more rare ones, like those owned by the guy who owns the two Black LM's.

Just in case you haven't seen that site, it's this one:

The one in the background could possibly be a GTR. In this pic, you would swear the car is an LM but in actuality it is GTR #07R:

That Orange car is seriously a GTR? All right, I guess that just proves that you can't just tell by looks. Yeah, for all we know that car in the back could be a normal roadster with LM treatment and an orange paint job. The guy who writes about his trip only mentions one LM, so it's probably not even an LM after all.

I don't want to divert the chat from black LM's to normal LM's, but I just found a site that has a pic of an orange LM on the freeway in what looks like the U.S. That means (if it's the U.S.) then if that car in the back was actually an LM, it would have to be the guy's who owns the Black LM'S! But the one in the back probably isn't an LM anyway. A good way to tell if it's the U.S. or England is to check the driving configuration. Unless this guy took the pic while he was driving, that would help explain.

Here's the site: http://www.turnermotorsport.com/f1_photo_contest.htm
Check to see where you think this is taken.

Wow - I could have saved this thread so many posts if I had been here sooner.

I knew immediately which F1 you were referring to when you mentioned you might have a photo of one of the black LMs. Incidentally, the photos on the centralcoastweb.com site were taken in 1997, so that "second LM" in those photos could very well be the LM that is now in the US, as it was formerly in England.

In fact, in this photo, the size of the front license plate which is covered up with black tape is identical to what LM3 wore when it was in Morrison's posession. One thing that is slightly odd about the car in that photo of the three is it is lacking any kind of windshield banner. It's possible it was being replaced at the time - but every LM I've seen photos of, and the LM-look GTRs have all had that banner at the top of the windsheild.

The last car you posted belongs to the user 'fselldorff' and that photo was taken on the road in Massachusetts. It is indeed a real LM, LM3 actually.

EDIT: Damn those typos...

spotting LMs

Another way to tell if a car is an LM or not is to look at the side windows. And you can do this from almost any angle. Road cars have the split side window with the power window at the bottom. LMs and GTRs use fixed Lexan (I think) side windows or a sliding Lexan window (either one).
