severe smoke above 5000 rpm

heeelllppp
I just picked up a nice 1979 rx,she was sitting for about 1.5 years,i brought her home and changed the cap, rotor, plugs and changed the oil.
She starts great cold w/choke and just a little pedal when hot.She smokes a little untill warmed up,but when the rpm's go over 5000 5500 for at least 2-3 seconds when you let off the throttle and then hit it again the most incredable plume of smoke comes from the tail pipe.
I cannot tell if it is comeing from the main exaust or the tube from the reactor chamber cooling port.
I have cheked the air pump, the apex oil pump volume(just fine).
Please help.any help would be great.
Thanks for your time.

does it still smoke after running for 5-6 minutes? if so that could mean it was overheated at some point, or has been abused and not taken care of and is probably either burning oil or coolant, or you might need knew seals... incase you didn't know, don't run the car hard till it warms up, atleast till the gauge is up past the bottom line, I don't run mine hard till its all the way up to half way though... just a thought

Re: severe smoke above 5000 rpm

From the symptoms you list, sounds like the motor is just old, and wearing out.

Re: severe smoke above 5000 rpm

Mine does the same. Has 245,000 miles on it. I just shift around 4500 rpm. Change oil every 3000 miles.

I'm getting about 23 mpg (no-cat). With cat, I get about 17 mpg.

Started doing this around 180,000 miles.

whats the fun in having an rx-7 if you can only rev it to 4500rpms? I couldn't handle that. I would have put in a new engine by then, 3 rotor probably

Re: severe smoke above 5000 rpm

Go with the 350 conversion. Then, you can do what your asking. RX-7 can only pull away from most 5.0L, when they back off.

I pull about 80 mph in 4th @ 4500rpm. Haven't tried this in 5th, since don't have enough room in traffic. I need more run way. With the 350, you don't just better brakes.

Re: severe smoke above 5000 rpm

Sounds like you eather have a bad apex seal if blowing blue.

If you are blowing white smoke then you have a bad coolant o-ring.

Eather way you need a rebuild. And a rebuild is the best part of owning the RX7, cause everytime you need a rebuild you can get a bunch of work done to the car.

Good luck
