RB26DETT in 280?

I have owned a 77 280 and a 74 260 I have wanted to get another. THe 2 I had were when I lived in alsaka and were both basket cases with so much rust it was insane.

IN my quest for another project car and my desire to have something a bit different I have been researching older Z's vs FC RX7's (I've owned both) Both cars would cost me about the same to fix up so cost is mute I think.

While the L28 engine is a good solid engine and seems to take a turbo well from what I have read it doesn't make the power that a RB26dett outof a skyline can make.

A rebuild and upgrades to the L28 and 5speed (would have to get an OD gear) from inital pricing runs between $3500 and $6k. The RB26 from Motorex the skyline importers is $4495 for a running engine and tranny with ECU.

OK there is obviously more to this and it all has me torn but I was looking for some feed back.

OH yea the FC would get the 20b 3 rotor motor conversion for about the same price as the RB26.

Re: RB26DETT in 280?

do you have any info on how hard the rb26 swap? AI wouldnt think it would be too hard since they are both l6 engines,....but the TT set-up along with the FMIC would be a tight fit i do believe.

I dont think it would be that tight. I saw a GT-S skyline and a 240Z side by side with hoods up. There actually looks like there would be more room front to back than the Skyline has. side to side it would be tight. but some careful massaging of the fenderwells might be needed.

Skylinegtr.com has the engine, tranny and ECU for $4495

Re: RB26DETT in 280?

cool, yah i saw some pics, and it looked kinda tight right where the turbo's are. And also in the front where the FMIC is located. But other than that it looked good. I wonder what it would take to get it in there? Custom mounts, skyline shift linkage, etc....Would you use the Z's driveshaft, axle etc?
