93 Grand Am Help!!!!
I have a 93 Grand Am with the Quad Four engine. I thought that the neutral switch was going out. We bought it used and it has never started in neutral we always had to put it in park. Now and then we would have to wiggle the shift lever to get it to start. Last week it apparently went for good, the starter motor would not turn at all no matter how much you wiggled the shifter. I located the neutral switch and attempted to bypass it. I exposed the wires and ran a wire between them and nothing, the starter still would not turn. I put a volt meter on them and no current showed, even when the key was turned. The neutral switch is located on top of the transaxle but I heard from someone today that this car might have a second saftey switch that is operated by a linkage or cable from the shifter to somewhere in the steering colume. Does anyone know if this car does have a second saftely switch? Is it perhaps impossible to bypass the neutral switch on this car? I did notice that there are 4 or 5 other smaller wires entering the neutral switch. Any idea what these are for?
The last two times that the car started I had to wiggle the shift lever and I noticed that the starter turned over slowly as if the battery was low. The battery appears to be ok, it shows 12 volts on voltmeter and lights look bright. Could it possibly be a problem with the starter or solenoid? Does anyone have any ideas? I really don't know where to go next with this car and can't really afford to take it to a garage right now.
