What I ment was Isn't there a material or special coating that you can apply to the sleeves? I think I remeber something about that in a review of the Mercedes Mclaren SLR

Yes. Many high-performance engines use a Nikasil coating on the cylinder liners, which is a nickel/silicon carbide mix.

Also, there are now ceramic coatings that one can apply (anywhere - cylinder liners, piston crowns, valve faces, exhaust headers, etc.).

Also, depending on whether your motor has "wet" or "dry" sleeves, you may be able to re sleeve the block.
