Re: 96 Nissan MAXIMA EGR valve problem!

EGR controls Emissions of NOX and helps to cool combustion temps down when engine is under load mobile only. Failing to repair may cause engine detonation / pre-ignition which if serious enough can cook spark plugs or in extreme cases melt pistons. Chances are though your newer max would or may have a knock sensor. If this is the case, the instant detonation occurs, the knock sensor will retard igntion timing to help correct the problem. This may in turn rob you of some performance. I would get the code diagnosed and repaired! Goodluck.

Re: 96 Nissan MAXIMA EGR valve problem!

Check vacuum lines etc. going to the valve. It may be a vacuum problem or a control problem. IE: control solenioid, vacuum transducer if equipped. (Check your underhood emissions sticker/vacuum line diagram and trace accordingly to make sure the correct vacuum lines are in place. If so, you got either a bad valve or bad control solenoid. More testing required to isolate.
Gotta good shop manual for your car?? Something you shouldn't be without if you wanna tackle this yourself.
Goodluck!
