Silencers

I was just wondering if anyone knows how good the silencers on the apexi N1 and tanabe racing medalion exhausts work and which one suppresses more noise

I don't even know why you would want to put a silencer on those. Why would you buy something like that only to put a silencer on it? It's not logical. I have the Tanabe Tuner Racing Medallion (Tanabe's universal muffler version of the Racing Medallion), and it's not really noisy. Really quiet, surprisingly, for its size. I don't see the need to put one in on that.

Re: Re: Silencers

I have the N1 and put tried out the silencer... it really doesn't even make that much of a difference. All it does is make the piping a bit smaller for like 3" on the end of the muffler. Anybody have a site I can host some .wav files of it on/off?

I'm not sure about the Super Racing Medallion. Since I have the Tuner Racing Medallion, I would think both are almost the same. Tanabe has a glass wool inside the muffler, right above the inner chamber, which decreases resonance considerably, so the noise isn't really that great. I would think it is better without the silencer--why buy it if you'd only think it would be noisy in the first place anyway?

Like I said, the Tanabe muffler I have isn't noisy, and in fact the one previous to the Tanabe was a lot noisier than it. Tanabe has made a very much nice muffler that at idle it's almost like stock--maybe only about twice or three times noisy. Not really much. At full rev it is still half less noisy than my previous one when that was only at about 3000rpm. So yeah, you'll really be happy with Tanabe. I am not sure about the others. I think 5Zigen's Fireball is much noisier than the Racing Medallion.

Re: Silencers

oh jesus, the Tanabe Racing Medallion catbacks are noisier than hell. I have 3 friends with those exhausts, one on a GS-R, Civic EX, and an Eclipse GSX...i can't stand riding in their cars it's so damn loud and buzzy

Well, I wouldn't know about the catback one, but my Tanabe muffler is quiet, as compared to my previous one. And note that the one I have is long (2-or 3 feet I think) with a large tip (4" if I am not mistaken), so conventional thinking will make you think it should be loud. But it's not, and even my bestfriend was pleasantly surprised by it. Note that my point of comparison is with my old muffler--which is a hell a lot louder.

Re: Silencers

actually, a longer muffler should be quieter because the exhaust gases are flowing through a longer baffle, making it quieter. I haven't heard a universal Tanabe either, but you also have smaller piping than the catbacks do too

Yes, that's what the shop that I had it installed said, it is quieter because the muffler's longer. I think the catback has about 2.5" piping as compared to my 2" piping, though the Tanabe I have has an inlet of about 2.5" connecting to the pipe, so it does follow in a way the catback's premise of a 2.5" piping.
