88 cutlass ciera starter problem

Hi. new to this forum and I hope someone can give me some good advice. I think I know what is wrong with my car but not sure so I thought I'd ask before I go spend money.

About a year ago, my car wouldn't start, wouldn't turn over, starter wouldn't engage the engine, although it would spin if i remember right. Then all of a sudden after it had sat for a day I tried it and it fired right up. About once a month since then it would do the same thing but always start on the second try. About 3 weeks ago it started doing it and it needed at least 3 tries before it would go. It sounds like the starter is just spinning. Now this last week it sometimes takes 6 or 7 times before it will finally engage the engine.
So I'm assuming that the gears on my starter are about all gone. Am I right? Is there anything else it could be? thanks for the help.

Car has about 145,000 miles on it. Coincidentally the muffler just fell off and the radio power button now needs to be held in for the radio to work. It seems as if everything is going bad. Second question..should I get rid of it soon?? Thanks again.

Replace the starter. The bendix is not engaging or rather is not strong to engage on the flywheel to start the engine. It has been getting weaker and weaker and is now giving up. Replace it. All the best.

Hi. I still haven't gotten this starter fixed---no money. Anyways, I'm going to do it now and I'm just wondering if its possibly the starter or is it just the starter drive assembly thing. I don't know that much about it. Is it worth it just to replace the starter assembly or should I just go ahead and have the whole starter replaced, since most of the cost of this is going to be labor and not parts. Thanks
