Bar Code on Keys

I just purchased a 2001 Pontiac Grand AM GT and in reading the owner's manual it states the keys are bar coded. I did not get the bar code tags with the car. Can I just have a locksmith make me a spare key or must I go to the dealer with information to obtain what the key code is (VIN#, etc.). Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
