1994 Grand Am..heater core?

Okay I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand am. The other day the car was being backed out and I noticed that it was coolant leaked on the ground. After requesting for the car to be pulled back it was a STRONG smell of antifreeze and then the steam coming out of the defroster vents steaming up the front on the car. Everyone that I have asked about this says that it is the heater core, which may be true, but is it supposed to leak still from the car? Does a busted heater core makes all of your coolant flow out? It is a tube looking part under the the car with a rubber elbow on the end that is leaking. The coolant pours out when you fill the resivoir with fluid and the car is on. Is this supposed to happen? Thanks ahead of time.

More than likely your heater core is leaking. That elbow you see is the evap drain, it drain water out of the heater/evap case. It is not susposed to leak coolant. And yes this leak will run you out of coolant fast.

Is it possible that this compromised anything other parts that have something to do with my cooling system? I would think that I would have to get the radiator flushed..just to make sure that it didn't damage anything. The car itself has not been moved except to a more stable ground to jack it up. I am just concerned that it may have had adverse effects on other components..

thanks for the info thus far ;-)

I had the same problem on my 94. what happened was my water pump went out, putting too much pressure on the hoses to the heater core and broke them. i put antifreeze in it and it went strait out the bottom. I seemed to have the same problem, so you may want to check yokur water pump too. I aint that mehcanically inclined, but i know that you will have a heck of a time getting to it.
