newbie - how do I fix the little things?

I recently bought a couple of 1:18 diecasts to start a collection, but there are a few flaws I'd like to fix on them, but I don't know any techniques (or tools required) in detailing. I did some searches here, but the tutorials I found were for really advanced stuff. This s/b 'easy' stuff, but I want to know how the experts do this so I don't make it worse

eg:
- fixing bent rearview mirror in beanstalk GT
- removing flash trim around edges of recessed rear lamps on GT
- cleaning up the ugly silver 'switches' on dash of GT
- removing flash trim on AA m3 side grill
- side grill on AA JB z8 not flush with car, i.e. sticks out a bit when closed (missiles hidden)

thanks
