My "service engine soon" light has been on for a while now, with the car having no apparant problems. I don't want to bring it to the dealer and spend the $ for nothing;
Any ideas as to why this is on? The only thing that I noticed is the rubber air intake tube that connects the air filter box to the motor is badly ripped by the clamp, thus an air leak... Can that be it?

Reset the ECU then see if the light returns. If it does a scanner is your only answer to find out what code it is.

ok to turn it off. there is a green button below the dash on the right side
if you get on your back you can see this button right above the gas pedal. |

I had that problem once, and I called my local honda dealer. They said it probably meant that when I had the oil changed they forgot to reset it. I reset it myself and the light hasn't come on since. This was like 8 months ago.

The check engine light has nothing to do with an oil change on Honda's, maybe the Maint. Req'd Light - 2 different things.
Maint. Req'd - Reminder Check Engine Light(MIL) - Warning light |

Disconnect the negative battery for 15 seconds, or depending on the car remove a fuse from the main fuse panel also works.
