Newbie Xterra owner
Hey all. I just bought a 2001 Xterra XE last weekend and am still learning about everything I can do with it. Are there any maintenance issues I should know about? I have about 3,000 miles left on the bumper to bumper, and would like to get everything checked out that should. I also noticed today that when I go in reverse down the curb on my driveway it sqeaks loudly. What could this be? Or is it normal?

As far as I know, unless something is wrong you'll get charged for having them "check" things. |

Yep, they will charge you about $75 to check things unless a problem is actually found. The only big thing I can think of that might be worth having checked is the exhaust manifolds; especially the passenger side, but you have until 5 years or 60K on drivetrain and having them checked is no guarranty that the dealer does it or is competent enough to tell when one is cracked.
The only other issue that seems to only apply to 2001's is a power window problem. Apparently Nissan went to a plastic clip in the window regulators (this is what I've heard anyway) and some people have had problems with them breaking. Problem is, this isn't something you can have the dealer check; the windows either work or they don't.

Steering stop info: http://pub175.ezboard.com/ftunfsfrm2...picID=39.topic
Pics are missing in that link. Here's one for reference The steering stop is just visible about 1/3 of the way up to the far right, and the dark vertical streak about 1/3 of the way from the right side directly across from it is where it rubs on the control arm. Apply grease to both points and it will get quiet. There are a total of 4 stops, one the front and one on the rear of the control arm, and the same pair on the other side's control arm too. Brent |
