Question Buying a MR2

Hey I'm looking into buying a MR2, nothing already supped up. I want to do it myself. What is the best year for suped one up? Also is anyone selling or knows someone or someplace selling a MR2 in the Central Florida area? I found one a '87 non-turbo w/ no A/C and light drivers right hood damage for $800, sucks but is the best I've found around here so far. Any help would be a help.

Hi Autosprink,

MR2 shouldn't be hard to find, it's just a little pricey since it's rare and discontinued. The more people crash them the more rare they gets. The best year I think would be 91 and 92 turbo. 93 and up they've went and change the suspension so it's not as fun as riding a 91-92. Especially on a raindy day when you like to do some spin out on the street to get attention. 88-89 MR2 are N/A or supercharged. If you like to fixed 1 up, I suggested getting a 91 and up Turbo for the big 200HP/200lbs torque.

Otherwise the 91 N/A and up should be a reliable rocket for your every day driven car.

you might want to check www.ebaymotors.com and www.autotrader.com

whichever generation you want should be fairly easy to find unless you want a specific trim/year/option. Be flexible and you'll get a great car if you keep looking.

91-92 MR2 are not the only turbo one. 91-95 all have turbo. But they are different in generation of MR2. 91-92 turbo basically identical with 14" wheels, the suspension designed are more for autocrossing due to the oversteering when hard corner. 93-95 turbo suspension was changed and seldom causes understeering, equipped with 15" wheels.
Only 94-95 turbo has the new round tail lights without the honeycomb center.

They are price around $5000 to $7000usd for 91-92 turbo in good condition. It just take alot of patient to find 1 good one. 93-95 are often price more, especially the 95 MR2 Turbo due to the low number of sales in the US (356 sold). If you need more information or just concerns, please take some time and visit the IMOC (International MR2 Owner's Club) http://www.mr2.com/ for more information. This is the link to the MR2 FAQ http://www.mr2.com/FAQ_html.html#3.1 maybe this page can help answer all your questions.

Last thing to remember, if you are going to buy a turbo MR2, make sure the turbo is still in good or fair working condition especially if you're going to spend much more for the turbo version.

if you have a 96 turbo your a lucky bastard and it's imported.

Basically, mk2 mr2's (91-95) are badass and you can hook them up with basically no end, theres always something new you can throw on them. You can pull 300hp in an mk2 easily with a big turbo and other engine mods.

mk1 (85-89) are badass also and IMO more fun to drive. Stock they run quarter mile in about 15.8 for N/A, and supercharged run mid 14's. With some engine mods (cams, gears, pulleys) you can run a second or more faster. You can hook these up also, but body cost more and there is only so much with engine you can do. However, you can find a good 1st gen mr2 with low low miles for about $3000-3500 and still have the $3500 left over to hook up the car, while if you buy a good mk2 (91-95) your going to pay more than likely at least $7000, and then you still gotta hook it up.
