Tips on buying a 323 GTi

Hello All!

I'm looking intobuying a Mazda 323 GTi MY1993 - the sort-of boxy shape one with 1.8 DOHC. Can anyone help me out by advising me of a checklist of things to look out for when viewing a car. Are the gearboxes weak throughout the model range or only so on the turbo variants due to the extra power? I'm changing from being a die-hard Subaru man (changing coshopefully it will be cheaper to insure and run).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

From my experience..
check that the gearbox shifts smoothly and doesn't crunch
check that the turbo is working fine... no smoke out the exhast
check the blowoff valve... oily deposits may indicate a problem

then engine is generally robust. it's the peripherals you need to worry about
