(The new, redesigned E-class sedan isn't rated.) Results for other European brands are mixed. The Saab 9-5 scored "above average" for reliability in Consumer Reports survey, but didn't outpoint Japanese rivals such as the Lexus IS300 or the Acura TL (which is made in America). Only one BMW model -- the venerable 5-series -- got an "average" reliability score. The Audi A4, a hot seller in recent years, was marked "well below average." Volkswagen, which owns Audi, fared poorly overall with its Volkswagen brand, with only the Passat achieving an "average" reliability rating. That doesn't bode well for VW's efforts to position the Volkswagen brand as a near-luxury make in America. Ford's Jaguar S-type and X-type models got branded as among the least-reliable models in their classes -- a setback for a brand that had made great strides."

Seems the latest BMW M3 is also beset by unreliability woes. 5,000 miles equals a rod through the block. 111 engine failures and counting. Some owners have had their second engine blow also. BMW advised owners to use 60 weight oil to try and fix the problem. That hasn't solved it. BMW was blaming its customers for "over revving" the engines. The SMG transmission should not allow an over rev to occur

'Sophistication' has its (exhorbitant) price
I'd rather enjoy Holden reliability that be seen pushing BMW sophistication - not a good look

misread- the main downfall of European cars in America is parts are a pain in the ass to sourfce- In Europe- the above mentioned cars rank at the top in consumer surveys- it's a mixed bag

Well .. it'd be remiss of me not to mention that more than a few Canadian-built LS-1 V8s imported for use in Commodores have also had engine 'issues' .. including the Callaway-modded unit that goes into the GTS. No thrown rods, but maybe 5% or less of Gen 3-equipped vehicles have developed piston slap and excessive oil consumption. Despite recent modifications and upgrades to the V8 the problems persist, even for 2003 vehicles. Newspapers quote Holden execs as regretting they aren't the engine's manufacturer and thus able to act on and solve the issue themselves, as they've bought it to the attention of the St Therese engine plant, who reportedly deny there's a problem in quality consistency. This is little help for both dissatisfied customers or Holden themselves, who are stuck with the task of rebuilding dud LS-1s under warranty. Upon reading of Australian complaints via the internet, some US LS-1 enthusiasts and F-Body owners have defended the engine, responding that, for those affected, engine rattles from cold and adding oil frequently is no big deal for owners and often typical of the engine in the US. However it certainly isn't typical of mainstream Aussies aspirations for a new car

Holden will begin manufacture itself of V8s in 2005/6, perhaps the mooted new-design 6 litre 'variable displacement' XV2 which debuts in North America in 2004

Which is in no way true of the HSV's- it's rather true of the Commodore Executive, Acclaim, Berlina and Calais V6's- but any Gen III V8 powered Holden is mind-blowingly great- especially the sound of them

Whateverway you look at it the Commodor and Falcon are better than any family sedan the Yanks are making...............

Australian cars are almost american cars... they belong to them.
But a BMW has nothing to deal with an Holden (GM).
The Commodore SV8 for example is maybe a good car, but not more than an Opel Omega or a Cadillac Catera....

depends on how you look at it- neither the Omega or Cater offer a V8 option and the Commodore is more spacious and better looking (Although the questionable in VY form) and the suspension is far more capable of tackling rough conditions- as well as that- the Commodore/Omega is GM's only RWD platform aside from that used n the Corvette.

And Comparing a Falcon XT 4.0 to a Taurus V6????? Absolutely no comparision the Falcon walks all over it
