Take the free Jetta or look for something else?

A friend of mine is going to give me a 91 VW Jetta GL (wolfsberg edition I think) for free or for very cheap but I'm kinda wiery of taking it because it seems kinda beat up and ran down. I want to get into the racing/import scene so I want to do mod it but I've heard that I would have to do some major mods to get it somewhat respectful. I don't have a car and in the process of getting a job. So my question is should I take the Jetta and go ahead 'hook it up' (performence and looks) or Just make it my daily driver and save up for an older Integra GS-R? (or any other import on the lvl with a gsr) Thx in advance.

If anything, take it and sell it.

Use it as your daily driver and save up for the car you really want.
