Motortrend Morons

I usually don't read magazines, but I've been off work for 2 boring and painfull days due to a virus I've had since Saturday. Anyway, I was readinf motortrend magazine, and there was a page with many stats on many cars. So I went to the ford section and looked at the Mustangs. Now I've seen a completely stock (besides slicks) 03 Mach I do a 12.97 in the 1/4. So I thought an average strip driver could do ATLEAST 13.5 right??? NOPE-they did a 13.8. Morons. And what was even more funny, they only clipped off a 13.0 in an 03 Cobra SVT. They suck. OK i'm done now.

Those slicks can make up that half second difference easily.

Yes they are writers, not drivers.

They think they are drivers, hell they think they are writers.

Do not take their times as gosple, since there are to many variables when running 1/4 mile times. It gets you in the ballpark, and that is it.

Oh I forgot to say that you should be able to do a 13.5 with the average strip driver on a stock vehicle without slicks. A half a second is a lot, a person driving on stock tires should know not to lauch as hard, but it doesn't seem like that would make a whole half a second to me.???

They correct all their times to the same atmospheric conditions, so maybe not comparable to a real driver on any given track, but camparable to other cars they test.

The 12.97 1/4 mile time that is famed for the Mach 1 was on the pre-production version, set by Evan Smith with drag radials, not slicks. I don't know if that's what you're referring to, but it was run at Atlanta, GA with a temp in the mid 90s and 80% humidity.

The production version was run by Evan later, and he recorded a 13.1x, I believe, with the car stone stock. Good 1/4 mile drivers at motortrend is an oxymoron. That's why it's so hard to trust times they release. In this forum there is somebody quoting time and time again the 5.0 outran the 305 Z28's but fell to the 350 Z28s in the late 80s early 90s. Since time after time the worthless drivers at Car & Driver (worst), Motor Trend (bad), and Road & Track (bad) were always behind the wheel, decent times for the cars are impossible to come by.

I don't remeber his name but it was a guy from Paul's High Performance. What's different about the pre-production version?

I'm at the local dragstrip alot and of the hundreds I've seen there I've NEVER seen ANY stone-stock Mustang pull a 12 in the quarter. I know, everyone in west Florida must be crappy racers, Tony Christian and Mike Moran included (hometown boys).

Not even a Cobra R or SVT? Those should run mid 12's.
And like I said before the Mach wasn't completely stock, it had slicks and that can take your time down almost .5 second.

We've had 5 of the '03 Cobras and many SVTs out there but no Cobra R's. None of the stock cars have broken into the 12's, even during the winter months with ideal (75 degree/60% humidity), none of them could pull it off. One of the new Cobra drivers did get a 13.03 on a run, but couldn't repeat within 2/10's. I watch closely as I am considering an 04 Cobra myself!

Any of them have slicks? And how good of drivers were they?

The answer to that is, the drivers suck. If you can't get a 12 out of an 03 Cobra, you need more practice or you're racing in Denver with 90* heat.

A real good driver will get a "stone stock" 2003 Cobra to about 12.5@112mph. An average experienced driver should be around 12.7ish@110mph.
