i love my car to death. yes, it is an auto, but unfortunately it is very slow off the line. I'd rather take a neon on a highway race rather than a strip race =o) i've seen it where ricers zip by me on the higher and think they have won the battle. when i strap on my seatbelt and burn him, i like to roll down the window and wave good bye to the 4 banger.

ok...i got a little off track. my point is that my auto is only slow off the line.

When I first got my car, all I had was a a popcharger and I raced a '99 Neon R/T that had catback, gutted cat, cam gears, headers, plug wires and CAI. I took him off the line, but didnt catch up until around 70MPH, never did pass him. And yes, I know how to shift. That thing was fucking quick.

yeah well he won't race me unless i pull my bottle but i think he sc because he won't let me look under the hood and he has 7 or 8 gauges one is a boost gauge but he told me its not connected, now as for the automagic hate on this thread you guys are crazy a 5-speed max is faster than an auto max unless you upgrade your tranny like me, i got a bulletproof tranny and can out shift a 5 speed max

i'm sure there are some drivers that can outshift your tranny, especially with a short-throw

I remember reading about a naturally aspirated Neon that ran 12's. There is alot of parts for them. I don't doubt that a heavily modified Neon can beat a max.

One of the DOHC ones with all the bolt-ons, cams and high-comp pistons would be pretty nasty. Albeit gay, but nasty.
12's? cars that run 12's have 400 hp and hit 60 in about 4.5 seconds. how can a 2 liter possibly be pushed to 400 hp, especially a neon 2 liter. S2000 (highest specific output for NA car) has 120 hp per liter, is RWD, and hits 60 in like 5 -5.5 seconds. i don't believe it, not without juice or boost

This car was a fully sponsored drag-only car. It had no interior whatsoever, plastic windows, slicks, etc. Probably bored and stroked as well. So he probably only needed something like 280whp (at the most) to move such a light car down the track.

There's a video floating around of the new Neon SRT running 12's with only 4 mods. It has a little over 300whp and full interior.

All you need to make the SRT-4 do that is a powerful turbo chip, new high power catbacks and the turbos ecu recalibrated.

I raced a modded Neonn with a new 2.0 engine swap. I believe he had intake headers and exhaust and a few othger things. I have an automatic and only have a K&N. He got me off the line but I ended up walking him down, plus, I have the windows down and overdrive on. Overall, I had him at the end. If a max is modded, the Max will beat a modded Neon.

i haven't even seen one in person yet other than the NY auto show at the jacob javits center last year. If i saw one i'd try to race it, but i wouldn't really expect to win.

here's my experience with the whole 5 speed vs auto thing. i have a 96 se auto (190 horse) and my friend has a 91 5 speed (160 horse). off the line he was almost immediately half a car length ahead of me. he continued to pull on me up to about 30 mph. once he hit 2nd gear i started to get back, and once i topped 2nd (80 mph) i was a car length ahead of him. also, hes an incredibly good driver so it didnt have anything to do with that. its just that having a clutch gave him a much better jump.
