Cressida sets new record?

A Durban man is refusing to pay a speeding fine that clocked him doing 963 km/h – about 40 km/h short of the speed of sound - in his 1989 Toyota Cressida.
The Sunday Independent reported that Abbubaker Khan was caught speeding in a 80 km/h zone in February. Khan received a summons in the post and said that because of the alleged speed he had been travelling he did not have the option of a fine and had to appear in court.

“I admit that I might have been speeding, but there is no way I could have been travelling that fast even if I wanted to,” he told the newspaper.

“It is a pity that I do not have wings on my car because then they would never have caught me. Even the metro police were astounded at the speed printout and said something must be wrong with their equipment. I told them that they were damn right,” Khan said.

Durban metro police spokesman Steve Edwards said Khan should contact them to see how they could solve the problem. “Maybe we should have a look at his car to see if there have been any slight modifications,” Edwards told The Sunday Independent.

Hmmmm, slight modifications.... Weeeeeeeell, it does have a solid fuel rocket engine - but I still don't think I could've been going that fast.

SAR10,000 and 2 years in jail......

Just have to ask a South African

I know of somebody that did modify their VW Passat and got away with it in court in South Africa.
He dropped an Audi turbo engine in and was clocked going nearly double the speed limit, he challenged in court on the premise that the car was an Passat and not capable of the speed the police claimed he was travelling at. He produced the registration papers for the car which showed it as a stock Passat, the police even confirmed the fact that it was indeed stock according to their records.
Case was dismissed without charges......

They only inspect the car when you register it, what's recorded then is what you own, there are no annual inspections or any sensible like that.

You'd be amazed at all the unroadworthy cars on the road.

Dave, didn't know this article was bogus, but I do know the roads around Durban are notorious for high-speed drivers......and it wouldn't surprise me if this happened considering the South African version of a police force....
