engine cuts on and off when cold outside
If anyone could please help me, I purchased a 96 avenger in the summer which ran fine. When it started getting cold out I started having problems with the engine cutting in and out at low speeds. The dash lights would ficker on and off as well. When the car reached higher speeds the engine would catch and run fine. It seems the colder it is, the worse it runs. last I had it out, it would not catch at all and I putted it around the block. I done even know where to begin with this one. I have not seen the check engine light come on at all so I dont think there are any codes. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Re: engine cuts on and off when cold outside
I have a 95 Avenger and I had the same problem. Used to take me about 10 tries to get the thing going when it was cold. Turned out that when I took the car to the dealer and told them what was going on, they immediately diagnosed it and said that I needed an ECU firmware upgrade and that they've known about the problem for forever but never made it a recall because it only occurs in some of the 2.5L V6's. Hopefully they give you a better price because the upgrade set me back $350.

Re: engine cuts on and off when cold outside
I have a 96 Avenger and had a similar problem... but it happened when it was warm or cold. What I found out is that the problem was a bad Speed Sensor, I had the my mechanic replace the $90 part and it has been running good since. I don't know if it will help you, but its worth a try.
