Hello! Name's Jon! Found this great forum while searching on google. I got my bird two months ago. 1998, V6, 5-speed manual, t-tops, red and so on. I love it to to death. I would have liked to get a v8, but at the age of 18, I'm lucky enough to even have a firebird ( my friends hate me!) I like the fact that i paid for it and i pay for insurance ( i respect it more) Anyway, as for mods ive gotten a K&N air filter and Magnaflow Cat-back exhaust. I was just wondering if any of you could give me some pointers on beginner mods. Some suggestions would be great. Thanks for reading my blurb, i know it was long!!!

i have a 96 Firebird and i was thinking of putting a magnaflow cat-back on it. how does yours sound? and did you notice any gain in power?

Hey, welcome to Automotive Forums! Congrats on gettin the bird. You're already off to a great start with the modifications. Next thing I'd get if I were you would be some ceramic coated headers. Those will really let it breathe better and give it more kick.

RG501- It sounds decent. Im not going to lie to you, you'll never get a V8 sound, but i will say its loud enough to put a smile on your face everytime you change gears. It has a low tone, while at an idle and as you rev to about 3000-4000 RPM's it has a sort of high sound with some rasp to it. It's hard to explain. I notice an improvement, the car has some more "get up and go". The car can rev to higher RPM's faster now, also. Nothing wrong that! It definitly gave the car an added boost. I'd go for it. Plus it looks amazing. Two chrome 3 wide inch pipes sticking out the rear......what an ass!!!!

Thanks for the advice blindxeyed.I heard that you have to do something to the engine first, in order for them to be effective. I could be wrong. Also, i heard somewhere that having a cold air intake changes the sound of the exhaust a bit. True?

No, you can have an internally stock engine and put headers on it. It'll do it wonders, and should give you anywhere from 10-15 HP. As for the cold air induction. Your car should already have it, and it does give your engine a deeper growl somewhat. All I'd recommend you get is a free flowing lid. The one you have now is semi-restrictive. Go with the transparent one, it looks really sick, especially if you put a firebird decal on it that's the same color of your car. After that, you would pretty much be all set with intake and exhaust. After that, if you're still not satisfied, then you could go get your computer tuned. That's normally good for another 10-20 horses.

Thanks for the feedback! That's good news about the headers. Are they difficult to install? What brand would you recommand? So my bird already has a cold air intake....hmmm, you learn something everyday!

Ah, no. My mistake.. I for some reason was thinking that the 98-02 Firebirds already came equipped with the SLP Ram Air system. But if you just get that, then you'll have the cold air mod. Sorry about that mixup. As for the headers. Well, I just bought some pacesetter ones a while back and got them installed for the most part. Only thing is... is that they were crap. The drivers side header was fine, no problems. But the passenger side one was just a nightmare. The middle pipe on the header came down at a 120 degree angle. So far down that I couldn't even get the bolt in, it was impossible. So I took it to the muffler shop since I also had to get my cat-back installed, and they got the screw, cut it down shorter and got it in. Other than that, they went in no problems. But after that incident, I would never recommend Pacesetter to anyone. I'd go with the RKSport ones if I were you. Mine were really difficult to get in. I had to take all the accessories off, and the accessory bracket as well. A huge pain.

Hey, i'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this but if you add an after market mass airflow sensor and a aftermarket aibox you'll get around a 10 hp gain roughly. I've added these two to my formula WS6 as well as a chip and i cant help but chirp tires every now and then but, then again, i do have a heavy foot. By the way, call me James and i'm 18 as well. And yeah, I think I mentioned he should get the aftermarket air lid, but I completely forgot about the maf sensor. Good rebound there.
