Re: Recap of European F1 Fleet (EXCLUDING England)

Here's one we don't see often enough. Chassis #071 in Düsseldorf/Germany for the McLaren MP4-12C Presentation.

My new favourite F1 road car right there. Put that in a garage with XPLM and XPGT and I'd be very pleased!

That is one good looking car. Much nicer than Papaya Orange in my opinion.

Hate to break it to you, but #071 is the same color as the LMs.

Re: Recap of European F1 Fleet (EXCLUDING England)

Really? I thought it was stated somewhere on these forums the 2 were different colours (Papaya/Historic)? Am I going crazy?

Time for a search

Re: Recap of European F1 Fleet (EXCLUDING England)

It is perhaps a slightly different hue, or it could be the result of the camera and lighting or your own monitor settings playing tricks on you. In past discussions of the color one or two people have pointed out that McLaren's orange paint has changed over the years (in part due to the change in paint formulation) and so there is not one single correct "McLaren Orange" paint.

In fact, if you look at this image of 14R and 16R at the MTC gathering (which I've parked next to each other through the magic of Photoshop) you can see that 14R's paint appears more yellow and 16R's leans more towards red end of the spectrum, if only slightly. One wonders if you stuck XP1 LM between this pair which color it would more closely resemble. My guess would be 14R's.

i'm jealous.

thats the car i want to see so bad but i only managed to see the owner's 996 GT1 in Düsseldorf. but i'm glad it's still in germany, since so many cars have left my country!

looking at the size of the license plate it seems to be still with the original owner.

Re: Recap of European F1 Fleet (EXCLUDING England)

Sami- I believe the other LARK GTR will end up being #04R having been rebuilt to 1996 GTR spec. We discussed may different theories here [The whereabouts of GTR 04R?], but still no one has confirmed what it actually says on the chassis plate in that LARK GTR which McLaren seem to own. In my mind there is no other GTR which it could be besides #04R.

Anyway, despite being confused over it for a very long time, I am 100% certain now that GTR 14R is the orange one that wears UK plate 'M66 MCL'. No question about it any longer.

= = =

Paul - how about this one?

Also - a friend of the program here sent me the links to this pair of discussions over on the Autosport message forums that touch on the many different shades of McLaren Orange and the reasoning (or perhaps, in some cases, a lack of reasoning) as to why they are not all the same throughout history. Comments are from people who've either studied the cars closely, spoken to people who were there, or were there themselves and they make for interesting reading on this topic.
