If you were a businessman, would you sink much time, effort, and money into a short-term employee, or an employee who WANTS to be and employee for the LONG haul?

Draftees bring very few skills...crimony, they are only 18-19 years old. They haven't had time to develop any skills.

The military today is NOTHING like the draftee military. I was in the military during the draft. I was there when the draft ended. Today's volunteer force is MUCH more professional...MUCH more competant.

Re: The Draft

Iwas there too, and the draftees were fine. I'm referring to skills such as farmer, (great in mechanized units) welders, plumbers, etc. Basic skills, yes, but they aren't a bunch of dummies that spent their youth smoking dope. TRAINABLE people. Expecting the working poor or unemployed teens to do all the dirty fighting is not only unfair, it's patronizing and snobbish.

Re: The Draft

The draftees were adequate and nothing more. Todays military is eons better than the draftee forces of that era. You are right that they weren't ALL pot smoking losers, but they were NOT anything nearl what the volunteer forces are today. The military is NOT just made up of losers who can't get a job anywhere else. That is bullshit!

Re: The Draft

I understand the Republicans forced the draft question onto the house floor for a possible vote so they could put this democrat propaganda to rest. I guess the idea is to show that no republican will vote for the draft. Anyone else heard about this? I heard it on NPR yesterday.

No - I hadn't heard they were putting it on the floor. I didn't think it was even remotely close to getting out of committee.

Why should the poor kids fight? Because they signed up for the military mainly so they can get their schooling for free. The "rich yuppies" worked their ass's off so they could pay for their kid's school.

This was in the paper today. I think it's complete bullshit.

"For 18 months House Republican leaders ignored the bill (about the draft), sponsored by liberal Democrats who complained that minorities and low-income Americans are doing a disproportionate share of the fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan." THEY SIGNED UP! no one forced them to join!

I think what you are thinking of is who actually sponsored a bill to really start a draft.

Legislation Details
'To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.'
Congress: 108
State: Federal
Chamber: House
Bill Number: H.R. 163
Sponsor: Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY)

Summary : Introduced. Universal National Service Act of 2003 - Declares that it is the obligation of every U.S. citizen, and every other person residing in the United States, between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a two-year period of national service, unless exempted, either as a member of an active or reserve component of the armed forces or in a civilian capacity that promotes national defense. Requires induction into national service by the President. Sets forth provisions governing: (1) induction deferments, postponements, and exemptions, including exemption of a conscientious objector from military service that includes combatant training; and (2) discharge following national service. Amends the Military Selective Service Act to authorize the military registration of females.

Co-sponsors:

Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-HI)
Rep. Wm. Lacy Clay (D-MO)
Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-NY)
Rep. Fortney Stark (D-CA)
Rep. John Conyers (D-MI)
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX)
Rep. Jesse Jackson (D-IL)
Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL)
Rep. Corrine Brown (D-FL)

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD)
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA)
Rep. James Moran (D-VA)
Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC)
Rep. Donna Christensen (D-VI)

What I am referring to is who is pushing for the vote to prove that that they are against it.(republicans)

Re: The Draft

Charlie Rengel of New York {D} brought up the draft issue just to stir up trouble. NO Republicans have even mentioned it.

Then you must be his favorite.

Is that your arguement? That's how you debate and discuss? That's how you go about proving your point?

You are pretty much worthless on these forums aren't you?

Reguardless of his reasoning to draw up a draft bill he is still a democrat bringing a draft bill to congress. All the co-sponsors of the bill are all democrats. This is what we pay them to do is to stir up trouble when they are in session? They don't have real work to do? Sounds like a bunch of kids. THen they have the nerve to say that republicans want the draft and that they are pushing for a draft. Same crap from politicians but just a different day. These people are a bunch of worthless liers. (I'm not limiting that last statement to democrats.)
