Karmann Ghia Ubercharged WIP!

Hi all, took break from 'tuners' to build something totally different and fun for me!

Concept is an ultra cool Ghia with some ROD flavor. I will update this thread soon, so check back and let me know what you think. Here are some pics ...

The kit :

Early mockup :

Rear wheelwells cut to make room for whitewall slicks :

Made mini tubs from sheet styrene :

Body mods were subtle. Side trim removed, some holes filled, trunk vents cut out, reshaped hood trim, etc. In primer now awaiting final wet sand + paint :

Wheel choice :

More in next post ...

Re: Karmann Ghia Uberchargerd WIP!

Idea for the aircooled mill was to try something different and something I never seen before. I wanted to run twin superchargers + Hilborn Fuel Injection setup fit all under the factory hood. I needed small, exact same size superchargers which I didn't have. I decided to try my hand at making them. These are built from various styrene stock + aluminum tubing cut exact length using mini miter + digital caliper.

Some aluminum trumpets for Hilborn setup which will be trimmed down, just mocked up :

Styrene work on fan housing :

These will be used for pulleys. Various sizes of aluminum tubing will be cut to length and depth and wear Mr. Model PE pulley face :

And finally, scratched some intake manifolds from polished solder + styrene :

Lots of items in primer now and much work to do! Should have updates soon and hope you enjoy the build. ~ Mike

It looks like an awesome project, and ubercool indeed. I liked the pullies and manifolds.

Yes, you have some talent here man!
Will you have to treat the solder to prevent from tarnishing or fading?
Are those RB Motion bolts on the manifolds?
This looks like it will be NICE!

Re: Karmann Ghia Uberchargerd WIP!

Very nice work! I like where you're going with this!

Did you think about leaving the aluminum exposed instead
of painting it?

Thought that it might spruce up the engine compartment
a little, but that's just me!

Keep up the good work!

Scott

Re: Karmann Ghia Uberchargerd WIP!

Thanks for the kind words! 450, if your talking about the SC's being left unpainted, my plan is to paint these flat magnesium for a more vintage/rod flavor. I didn't want to modernize it too much, even scrapped my idea of using a giant intercooler between the sc's. Just wouldn't have looked right IMO.

Andy, yes those are RB Motion nut/bolt combo. Good eye! And the solder will wear a thin clearcoat to prevent discoloring.

I hope to have some progress this week. Thanks for looking, ~Mike

Re: Karmann Ghia Uberchargerd WIP!

Its been a long time. Work has been slow on this build. Made some changes and some progress...

Some mock ups ..

Some black anodized billet drag rims-

Brass fuel fittings installed in manifolds and manifolds now mounted on superchargers (finally). The trumpets are just resting on top. Next, the mani's will get PE washers and nut/bolt stud bits (from Scalehardware) to button them down. Then throttle plates, linkages, fuel dist. blocks, fuel line, etc. to come.
I'll try to keep this updated much sooner and with more progress! (winter is coming, more time inside building!)

mock up + some bits ..

mounted (finally!)..
