the gas cap code
Hi Everyone,
2000 gt code is p0440 so i have been reading through some of the posts for the p0440 code. I have a couple of questions though. I am going to try and figure this out myself before taking in to a shop. I dont think it is the gas cap because the cap is fairly new. what would be the next thing i should check. i see some posts state to check 'the lines at the evaporative purge solenoid, evaporative cannister and to the gas tank at the fuel pump assembly'. so that is what i will do. but can someone tell me where to look for these things (pics would be great if someone had some to post). also, once something is fixed, how does the check engine light go off. a driving cycle is exactly what? how many miles etc. or do i need to clear the light myself using the procedure that someone else had posted. also, autozone said to take it to a shop and have them do a smoke test on it. would that be correct? thanks for any info/input you can give. |

Re: the gas cap code
DTC P0440 is a gross/large leak. If you can't see anything obvious in the evaporative emissions systems then a smoke test may help find the leak. As to the lines and components you should have an illustration in the engine compartment area and there is one in the service manual. The best way to reset any of the DTC(s) and clear the SES/CEL light is with an odb-ii scanner.

Re: the gas cap code
I had the same problem with my grand prix it turned out 2 be a hairline crack in the gas filler tube where the gas cap screws on u could see the crack but ut was really small i ended up have mine smoked 2 find the leak so i bought a filler tube and a gm gascap because the aftermarket ones r garbage if i were u i would buy a gm gas cap from a dealer if u havent already and try that first and then reset the computer u can do this by disconnecting the battery and turnen the key on and off then reconnect the battery see if the lght stays off maybe u will get lucky good luck.
