OBD II scanners
Hello does anyone know of any decent, reasonably priced OBD II scanners? I saw some on the Harbor Freight tools site that seemed to be reasonably priced but I am unaware if there really is a difference in quality between scanners as I have never had a code scanner or anything like that before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: OBD II scanners
For the hobbyist, I think most scanners will do fine. They are boxes that turn complicated hexadecimal code into something you can read. Its not rocket science, its more like a really expensive and sophisticated calculator. If you're going to read 40 cars a day like a dealer, I'd worry about getting the bulletproof model, but if you just want to read an occasional code, Harbor Freight is probably a fine option.
Another free option to consider is your local parts store. Almost all chain parts stores have a scanner and they'll check your codes for free. If you don't mind driving over there, its a good way for you to never have to pay for your own scanner.

Re: OBD II scanners
I've got a Auto-tap that hooks into a laptop. While its not cheap @ $200 it does give a alot more info than a handheld scanner. It not only gives DTC codes it gives emission info and real time info on all kinds of engine components.

Re: OBD II scanners
Thanks both of you. I just want one because I plan to keep my current vehicle for a long time and I do most of my own repairs so I figure it would come in handy later down the road.

Re: OBD II scanners
one i have found quite useful is the scangauge2, It is more intended to be rather "installed" in one vehicle, but it can be taken around to others. What makes this one interesting is that not only does it read codes but it also acts as digital gauges (rpm, mph, iat, cwt, tps, etc.) and fuel monitor. It will give you miles per gallon, gallons per hour, and keep track of your fuel and the cost of gas/travel. It's basically an add on DIC for cars that dont have the fancy dash displays. retail 170$.

Re: OBD II scanners
theres 3 levels. the cheap code only scanners are usually under 100 bucks, the slightly better ones that you pick up at most auto parts stores or whatever that can read sensors also are usually 150-400 bucks, and the full on shop scanners like the genesys and its clones that are several thousand dollars.
