Kit Review Hasegawa Spoke Wheel Set for the Ferrari 250 TR

There I was, looking for a replacement wheel set for my Ferrari 365 GTB/4 and I thought I try this upgrade set out. I know that everybody who is dead hard on detail and accuracy would never utilize a wheel set from a car from 1958 to be a donor for the GTB/4, but I just wanted to try it out.

First I would like to show you the Hasegawa upgrade set. You will always need the knock-offs and tires from the kit you build as they are nit included. The front wheels are smaller than the rear wheels. This is what you get:

The PE is quite nice. Important for me is that you can cut the PE-parts easily rom the PE-sprue. That works Well. There is enough room for the PE-scissors.

The actual rims are made from plastic, which is okay. What I really like is that Hasegawa made sure that every piece is connected to the sprue on its backside. By this you cut and clean on sides of the used parts that won´t be visible afterwards. This is something Revell and Fujimi should give a thought.

Notice that the plastic rims are not chromed. For comparison I added a Revell-knock-off from a GTB/4.

One wheel consists of 5 PE-Layers and 1 outer and 1 inner rim. To add the outer rim a lot of pressure is necessary in order to bend the upper 2 PE-parts into shape. I used super-glue and clamps for this task and it worked well. In the end the wheel looks like this:

Comparison with the Hasegawa Ferrari 250 TR kit wheel:

Comparison with the Revell 365 GTB/4 kit wheel:

In the end this upgrade kit is a great way to detail up your Ferrari for rather cheap money (around 2000 yen). In my opinion these wheels look a lot better than the kit wheels and give you the opportunity to enhance older Ferrari and Jaguar-kits as well if you are not to keen on accuracy but more on looks.

I hope this helped on making the decision whether to get the set or not.

Robert

That style rim looks good on the Daytona...did you check to see if the Hasegawa rims fit in the Fujimi Daytona tyres?

Thanks for the review! Those wheels look nice on the Daytona. As Veyron pointed out you should try to see if there is a way to use the original Daytona tires with the PE rims. I think it would look even better.

Thanks for the pics; I got the kit yesterday and also put one of the rear wheels together, and am pretty happy with it. You have to really pay attention to the correct sequence...I was assembling w/ tiny drops of CA glue, and glad I had some debonder as I totally goofed putting the second/third (of five) wire sections in the right place

The wheels should look pretty authentic w/some silver paint. I'm not swayed by the shiny "bling" of the plated rims and bright P/E, these wheels demand to be a properly-scaled shade of silver

While they look nice, they don't look as nice as MFH's wheels/tires. But then again, you can get this kit/wheels for a fraction of a MFH kit.

My thoughts exactly. On an effect/$ scale, they offer good value IMO.

Thanks for posting the pics, Robert - you saved me
