ok i was messing around the engine comaprtment unhooking stuff to get at the clucth cable adjustment and found this part that was in the way , it hooks up to the intake tube off the stock airbox the hose to it is about 4 inches long and has about a one inch inside diamter it goes to this 7 inch long 3.5inch tall box (nissan part number 58y00), what is this box ? only thing i could figure is it would trap mositure . clutch is adjusted and the part is back in but it sure has my curiosity ....if no one knows ill go to nissan next week to cross the number to see what it is ...

It is a resonator/silencer. Some say it also regulates the way the air flows into the throttle body. Here is a full thread on it and what it does, and several ways on how it can be removed safely.

NOTE: If you remove it, you must plug it with something. If not, your engine will run like shit or not even run. Most say Gatorade caps work well to cap it off, but I would suggest you use a PVC pipe end cap that slides into the hole on the rubber intake hose like I did and a few others have done. There is an outer lip on the PVC cap so it will not get sucked into the throttle body. It's about $2 at you local hardware store.

It is indeed a resonator. I don't see how it can smooth the air flow to the TB as the tech on the SR20DE forum said.

To block it off, go to your favorite auto parts store and ask for a 1 5/8" Expand-Tite. It's a rubber plug with a large washer on it and a bolt through it. When you tighten the nut on the bolt, the rubber plug expands tightly into the hole. Put the OEM clamp on the intake pipe before tightening the nut.

I didn't notice any performance gain or any increased noise level. I eliminated it because it was an automotive appendix and without it I could adjust the clutch better.

I'm with you George. If it was to correct the air flow going into the throttle body, Nissan would not have gotten rid of it on the 95+ 200SX SE-R and Sentra SE's.

All of the '91 to '96 G20's still had it though. I would think that it would cause a turbulence of sorts that would interfere with the flow of air going into the throttle body!

It also makes it a hell of a lot easier to adjust the clutch cable with it out of the way.
