How do I get good prices?

As you may have noticed car audio is getting really expensive. i have a budget but these awesome headunits keep blowing it. I find the one i want only to look down at the 500+ pricetag. I'm only going to get some speakers that replace the ones I have now and probably a headunit. It just seems like the more I shop around the more money it is going to cost to get what I want. Any help in terms of opinions and tips is greatly appreciated. I'm dealing with a place that I've haggled with twice before. So I can get a good deal, I just am frustrated that I might have to spend allot of money.

just how much do you REALLY need a headunit to do ? I need it to play CD's and adjust the radio - all the other stuff is unecessary to me. Unfortunately, the manufacturers don't see things the way I do - so now, I look at head units with swimming dolphin displays and crap like that, that end up doubling the cost. The things that really matter like a good D/A converter, solid skip-free transport, and a clean high power preamp seem too much to ask for.

features like built in LP crossover comes in handy, especially if you have a JBL sub amp that only uses a measly 6db octave inductor

for my front speakers I want to stay near 100$ for a pair

for my rear speakers I want to stay near 150$ for a pair

for my head unit I want to stay near 300$

the main thing my head unit is ging to do is mp3 files and regular cd's, maybe a video screen later.

I don't really like using Ebay, I like to see before I buy.

the problem here is that if you use a headunits built in crossover, then you will not be able to use a SYSTEM EQ - since a system EQ must come BEFORE the crossover.

I found out that the place I bought my car from can get me good prices from one of the best electronic stores in town. It is where all the NFL football players around here go to get there cars modified. I'll probably do something with that soon. They can also get me dealer prices for leather seats, sunroofs, and paintjobs. I don't need most of this but was just letting you guys in on my find.
